A Spoon, simple in concept yet great in potential.
After stirring together the essential ingredients of the perfect cup of
coffee (one cream, two sugars) it is laid to rest on a cozy bed of discarded
sugar packets.

Night transcends
to morning as coffee cups sit empty on a dirty table and cigarettes are
extinguished amid the ashes.
From the lips to the ashtray over and over again the dance is played out.
Wafting trails of smoke the only clue to where the cigarette has once been.

Inspiration strikes. The only refuge is an unused napkin that has the capacity
to hold the words that need to be freed.

Cigarette in Hand
The conversation turns from pleasant things to the everyday tasks.
The last drop of the chocolate malt is swallowed.

Ashtray

Cigarette in Hand
One last drag before the night is through. One last drag.

Conversation and Cake
Friends emerge from hidden corners with offerings of food and conversation.
Coffee cups run full with bitter liquid and stomachs rumble.

Coffee and Cigarettes
Coffee and smoke, cream and sugar, it is the ultimate team.

Empty
Staring down at the last drops of what was an excellent cup of tea.

Coffee and Cream
Lingering in the bitter brew, the cream makes patterns as it churns,
striving for its independence.

Girl with a Cigarette
She looked like one of those '50s poster: elegant.

Hand Through Flame
Hand through a lighter's flame, fire burning nothing but the dirt on your
hands. The conversation quiets to a dull roar.

Thought
Though the conversation continued, the mood slowed, and thoughts turned
inward.

Discussion
Through the silence a passionate voice is heard trying to make a point that
will fall on deaf ears.

The Usual
From open to close they linger, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes,
listening to music and talking about the last performance of a local band,
or the up-and-coming-ness of a new artist. It is a place where
everyone knows who you are and where you came from though they may not
remember your name. It is a dysfunctional family immersed in coffee
and ash.
Standing proudly wedged into the hole of a rejected Life Saver, the
cigarette butt declares itself king of the mountain.
